What I Wish I Knew Before Moving Abroad

Before I moved abroad, I wish I had known to bring small gifts—like candies, stickers, pencils, or other little trinkets—to give to my students.

Handing out these “small gifts” during my first classes would’ve been a fun way to share American culture. More importantly, it would’ve helped me connect with the local culture right from the start. In many countries, gift-giving is a meaningful tradition. For example, in Japan, it’s common to give omiyage (souvenirs) to family, friends, coworkers, and even students. These are often small treats or keepsakes from your hometown or travels.

So before you move abroad, consider packing a few small gifts. Whether you’re sharing a bit of your culture or simply spreading joy, you’ll be glad you did.
