Travel Tip #4: Boots on the Ground

When moving or staying long-term abroad, finding affordable accommodation can be one of the biggest stressors.

From my time living in Phuket, Thailand, I learned that the internet isn’t always a “one-stop shop.” Some of the best deals never make it online—you’ll need to do some old-fashioned, boots-on-the-ground searching.

Once you’ve picked your preferred area, drive or walk around looking for “Room for Rent” signs. Then, speak directly with the owner or manager about booking. In many countries, especially in Southeast Asia, the most budget-friendly options are only found in person.
