Online Teaching Do’s #4: Be Funny… Or At Least Try!

Humor can make a huge difference in your lessons—but that doesn’t mean you need to be a stand-up comedian.

In fact, I’d recommend avoiding most jokes, especially when teaching across cultures. What’s funny in one country might fall flat—or worse—in another.

Instead, try simple and universal things like funny faces, sound effects, exaggerated expressions, or even saying something totally absurd just to get a laugh. The key is to read the room (or the Zoom!). What works for one group of students might not land with another, so give yourself space to experiment.

It might take a few tries, but once you find what clicks, class will be more fun—for your students and for you.
