Online Teaching Don’t #6: Don’t Speak Too Fast or Use Complicated Language

When I first started teaching English, I spoke way too quickly. I didn’t realize it at the time because my students nodded politely, even though they didn’t really understand me. In many Asian cultures, being reserved and non-confrontational is encouraged, so students rarely told me when they were confused.

I had to train myself to pause mid-sentence and check for understanding. Over time, I learned to slow down and simplify my language, and eventually it became second nature. In fact, I slowed down so much that I even found myself speaking more clearly to native English speakers—it was pretty funny!

On a serious note, speaking slowly has become one of my biggest strengths as a teacher. It helps students feel more comfortable and confident, which makes me more attractive as an instructor.

Takeaways: Adjust your speed, simplify your language, and check comprehension often.
